AI sales agent vs hiring a salesperson: what each costs, and what each can't do.

You get more messages than you can answer, and you're thinking about hiring. Before you post the job, here's the math, done at the minimum on purpose: the lowest honest number for a salesperson, next to what an AI sales agent costs. Then what each one can do that the other can't. Sometimes the right answer is to hire. Often it's both.

The math, at the minimum.

Take one full-time salesperson at $16 an hour, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year. Add only the employer's share of Social Security and Medicare: 7.65%. Nothing else.

On a monthly Growth plan, add $297 for setup, once: $6,261 in year one. Starter, at $297 a month, costs $3,861 in year one, or $2,970 on the yearly plan.

Why $16 an hour? Because it's a floor. In May 2025, the median wage for retail salespeople in the US was $17.03 an hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. An experienced salesperson costs far more, and a commission plan more again.

What we left out. Your real number is higher.

The $2,985 above includes wages and the 7.65% payroll taxes. It leaves out everything else a hire costs:

  • Benefits. Across private industry, benefits, payroll taxes included, made up 30.0% of what employers spent on compensation in June 2026 (BLS). Paid leave alone was 8.1% for full-time workers.
  • Unemployment taxes. The federal tax is 6.0% of the first $7,000 of wages, or $42 a year after the full credit for state tax, which you pay to your state on top.
  • Workers' comp insurance, where your state requires it.
  • Commission or bonuses, if you pay them.
  • Hiring and training. The job ad, the interviews, the weeks before they sell on their own.
  • Your time managing them, and their phone, laptop and software.

We didn't add any of it, because every business is different. Add your own. The point holds at the floor.

The hours: 40 of 168.

A full-time salesperson works 40 hours a week. Your customers can write in any of the 168. Evenings after dinner, Saturday mornings, Sunday nights when they finally sit down to decide.

To answer them all with people, you'd need four or five full-time hires on rotation: nearly $12,000 a month at $16 an hour, before benefits. So the evening messages wait for the morning, and the weekend messages wait for Monday.

Your closer answers every hour of the week, on every channel in your plan, with the same prices and the same rules at 3 PM on a Tuesday and 11 PM on a Sunday.

What a person does that the closer doesn't.

Let's be straight about it. A good salesperson does things your closer won't:

  • Takes phone calls. Your closer sells in writing only. It doesn't answer the phone and doesn't call anyone.
  • Meets people. Showroom visits, site visits, a handshake, a walk through the venue.
  • Reads a room. Two partners who disagree, a buyer who says yes but means maybe, a deal with five people around the table.
  • Bends the rules. A discount you didn't plan for, a special delivery date, a favor for a loyal customer. Your closer only offers what you approved.
  • Builds long relationships. The client who comes back every year because they like dealing with Sam.

If most of your sales happen on the phone or in person, hire. Your closer won't do that part.

What the closer does that a person can't.

And the other way around. Not because people aren't good, but because people need sleep, weekends and days off:

  • Every hour of the week. No shifts, no time off, no sick days, no bad mood on a Friday afternoon.
  • Every channel at once. WhatsApp, Telegram, your website chat and email, without dropping a thread.
  • The same rules, every time. Your approved prices and terms, on message one and message three hundred.
  • The customer's own language. It answers in whatever language they write in.
  • The follow-up nobody forgets. One message, 24 hours later, by email or Telegram, to a prospect who went quiet. Never after a clear no.
  • Better every week, with your OK. Every Monday it brings you the questions it couldn't answer, each with a suggested answer tested on 8 situations. You approve, edit or reject.
  • Everything on record. Every conversation, sale and handoff in your Monday report.

Everything it does · How it sells on WhatsApp · Guides by trade

Often, the answer is both.

Your closer takes every first conversation, at any hour. It qualifies, answers objections and sends your payment or booking link. When a customer asks for a person, it takes their contact details and hands your team the whole conversation. Your salesperson starts the day with buyers who are ready to talk, instead of a pile of “how much is it?” Here's what that looks like. Say you build pools, and your salesperson works Monday to Friday.

10:18 PM, Sunday · WhatsApp

Hi, what would your Lagoon pool cost with a spa? Our yard is about 40 by 30.

  • Sunday night. Your salesperson is off until Monday.

Hi, I'm Tidemoor's AI sales agent.1 A yard that size fits the Lagoon, 26 by 13 ft. With a spa, it usually comes to $58,000 to $72,000, depending on access and finishes.2 The site visit is free and gets you a fixed quote. Want the link to book it?

Yes. But I'd like to talk to someone about financing first. My number is (602) 555-0148.

10:22 PM

Got it. I've passed your number to the Tidemoor team, and someone will get back to you.3 Here's the link to book your free site visit in the meantime:

  • 4The owner's own booking link.

Booked for Saturday morning.

  • Monday, 8 AM: your salesperson has the email alert with the number and the full conversation, and calls a buyer with a site visit already booked.

AI sales agent or a hire: your questions.

Anything else: ask the closer above, any time, or write to contact@rexorgroup.com.

AI vs a sales rep: can it replace a salesperson?

For the conversations that happen in writing, it can take most of the load: answering, qualifying, handling objections, sending your link, confirming the payment. For calls, visits and deals that need judgment outside your rules, no. That's why it hands those to your team.

Is it cheaper than a part-time salesperson?

Yes. Twenty hours a week at $16 an hour is over $1,490 a month with payroll taxes alone. Growth is $497 a month and covers every hour of the week. A part-timer still does what the closer can't: calls, visits, judgment.

Does it take a commission?

Never. You pay your plan and any extra replies beyond it: $0.08 each on Starter, $0.06 on Growth. Never a share of what it sells.

Can it negotiate?

Within your rules. If you allow a discount, a payment plan or a free extra, it can offer it. Anything else goes to your team.

What if it gets something wrong?

It only says what you approved, and every reply passes automatic checks and a review by another AI before it's sent. Like any AI, it can still make a mistake. When it doesn't know, it says so and the question lands in your Monday report.

Will my customers know it's an AI?

Yes. It says so when the conversation starts, and again whenever someone asks.

How long before it's working?

Your private trial is ready as soon as you approve your setup answers. It goes live when you say yes. How we build it.

Before you hire, talk to the closer.

Ask it what a salesperson would cost you, and what it can't do. Then decide.
